Criminal legal aid protests go on
Legal aid lawyers joined members of the probation officers’ union, Napo, in two days of protests across the country on 31 March and 1 April. A rally in London took place on 1 April, followed by a march to the Ministry of Justice. There were noticeably fewer lawyers at the event than at the previous one on 7 March. The general consensus among practitioners who spoke to LAG was that this was due to the recent agreement reached between the Bar and the government.
A barrister attending the rally told LAG that many of his colleagues did not support the deal with the government and ‘the fact we are having a ballot on this means this is not over’.
