Police Station Update: 40 Years of PACE
The Police and Criminal Evidence Act 1984 (PACE) passed into law 40 years ago. To mark this anniversary and to consider the current issues with PACE, and whether it is now fit for purpose, Sandra Paul and Matt Hardcastle will be hosting a discussion with Professor Ed Cape.
Ed was in practice as a criminal defence lawyer before and after PACE came into force, and has since written about and conducted research on the impact of PACE on the early stages of the criminal process and the implications for defence lawyers. Matthew and Sandra have extensive, current experience of acting for clients at the police station which, of course, requires a detailed, practical knowledge of PACE and the Codes of Practice. All three are co-authors of Defending Suspects at Police Stations, the 9th edition of which is due to be published in 2025.
This will be a hybrid event hosted at Kingsley Napley with drinks and canapes to follow for those who attend in person. We invite delegates who sign up to the webinar to let us know of any particular aspects they would like us to cover, or questions they have about PACE and/or the Codes. To submit a topic or question, please e-mail it to ed.cape@uwe.ac.uk.
By purchasing a ticket for this webinar, you will also receive a copy of the recording of the event.
