As the Retained EU Law (Revocation and Reform) Bill entered report stage in the House of Lords in May 2023, the government tabled amendments to remove the controversial sunset provisions that would have seen around 4,800 pieces of retained legislation repealed automatically at the end of this year. The amendments replaced them with a list of around 600 ‘EU laws’ to be repealed at the end of 2023 (with another 500 to be repealed by the Procurement, and Financial Services and Markets Bills). Lords’ amendments to maintain environmental protection passed, though similar amendments on workers’ rights were defeated. The Lords also made amendments to give parliament a say on significant changes. Having received its third reading in the Lords on 22 May 2023, as Legal Action went to press the bill was in its final stages with Commons consideration of the Lords’ amendments due to take place from 24 May 2023.
