The Law Society published Proposals for a 21st century justice system in October 2023. The green paper, part of its 21st Century Justice project, which was launched in March this year, contains reforms intended to improve access to justice for low-income individuals and small businesses, including:
the ‘Solutions Explorer’, an online diagnostic tool that would support individuals and small businesses in identifying the most appropriate dispute resolution processes for their legal problems;
strengthening out-of-court dispute resolution processes for individuals and businesses;
a blueprint for ensuring that digital justice portals work for professionals and lay users alike;
ways to make legal services more affordable, such as flexible payments and wider promotion of legal expenses insurance; and
changes to the delivery of civil legal aid so that it reaches more people, including reforming the Legal Aid Agency.
Responses to the questions posed in the paper should be sent to campaigns@lawsociety.org.uk by 5 January 2024.
