The first in a new series of talks organised by LAG about miscarriages of justice and those on the sharp end of the justice system.
Join us at Garden Court Chambers on 26 October from 6-8pm to hear defence lawyer, and co-director of APPEAL, Matt Foot and journalist Morag Livingstone talk about their book Charged: how the police try to suppress protest. Jodie Blackstock and Michael Goold from Garden Court Chambers will join Matt and Morag to discuss the erosion of our right to protest and police powers. The evening's discussion will be chaired by Fiona Bawdon, a journalist, campaigner, and researcher, whose work focuses on social justice issues.
The talk will be followed by a drinks reception, hosted by Garden Court Chambers.
Rough Justice
This event is the first in a new series, organised by LAG, on Rough Justice. This event will focus on the erosion of our right to protest and there will be more events in the coming months on the failings of our justice system. We hope you will be able to join us.
November 21: Stephen Kamlish KC, Moazam Begg and Mariam Hussain, sister of Khobaib Hussain, will talk about the Birmingham Four case. On the day the four men were convicted in 2017, their solicitor Gareth Peirce took the unprecedented step of making a public statement on behalf of their legal team. ‘… jurors can on occasion get things wrong. They have done so in significant cases in the past - nowhere more shockingly than when the allegation has been of involvement by defendants in terrorist activity. We are profoundly concerned that the jury in this case has got it wrong.’ More: www.birminghamfour.co.uk
In the new year, Garden Court’s Henry Blaxland KC will talk about the Sam Hallam case and the scandalous lack of compensation for victims of miscarriages of justice
Emily Bolton, founder of APPEAL, will talk about the Andy Malkinson case
New year dates and further talks to be confirmed.
